Composed in 1806, it has become a favourite in the classical music repertoire, showcasing Beethoven's innovative approach to the concerto form and his ability to blend virtuosity with profound musical expression.
Beethoven - Symphony No. 6, Op. 68
Beethoven's "Pastoral" Symphony is a five-movement work depicting scenes from nature. The first movement is a serene "Awakening of Cheerful Feelings." The second features bird calls by the woodwinds. The third is an energetic "Merry Gathering of Country Folk." The fourth movement is a dramatic "Thunderstorm," leading to the final "Shepherd's Song" in a peaceful, pastoral mood. Beethoven intended the symphony to evoke feelings of nature rather than directly depict scenes. It was premiered alongside his Fifth Symphony in 1808 and is performed in this concert in an arrangement for string sextet.
